Are you Traveling? Eating Out? Cell Phone Etiquette – Please!
If you’ve been on a plane or in a restaurant during the past ten years, you’ve probably seen someone with poor cell phone etiquette. First there’s the guy who thinks he has to yell into his phone so that someone 2,000 miles away can hear him.
Then there’s the woman trying to reason with her teenage daughter—and she’s not making much progress. Her frustration is adding to your frustration.
And who’s not seen the brassy executive trying to win the prize for the most obnoxious, arrogant conversation of the day? This is also the guy who, if he’s on an airplane, thinks that the FCC’s rules to shut off cell phones once the boarding door is closed do not apply to him.
I’m all for communicating – but here are a few thoughts regarding using your phone on an airplane or in a restaurant:
1. Try wrapping up your phone calls before getting on a plane or taking a seat in a restaurant.
2. If #1 is not possible, try talking softer. Much softer. It works! Really!
Believe it or not, people on the other end of the line can actually hear us talking if we talk softly and calmly.
Essentially, talk in a voice tone that would be appropriate for talking with someone sitting right next to you. You might be amazed, but people will still be able to hear you. Really.

Kind of a PS — someone just emailed me a short slide show on the Ten Commandments of Cell Phone Etiquette.” Kinda humorous. And — to my dismay — I’ve been guilty of breaking a few of them. Time to repent!
I think people who dont have cell phone etquette are just plain rude! It is easy to claim that you are not familiar with the etiquette of something when in fact you just dont care about annoying other people. That’s just my 2 cents!
Great blog by the way
