Cool things to do with your employees in August
OMG, here it is August 10th and I’ve been so distracted with visiting relatives, personal time off, yard work—and regular ‘work’—that I forgot about posting the cool things to do with your employees during August at the first of the month.
But, with three weeks still remaining, there are still cool things to do. . . . First some belated celebrations:
August 3: Watermelon Day. This begs a seed spittin’ contest. Outside is recommended. You could also include a Watermelon Trivia contest.
August 5: National Mustard Day. Yes – time for taste tests and votes for “favorite mustard”!
August 8: Sneak zucchini onto your neighbor’s porch night. Or your co-workers’ desks!
The 16th of August is part of a traditional bratwurst festival. Being from Chicago, I must heartily endorse the consumption of brats. Bring on the Kraut!
The 19th is National Potato Day, and being that I currently live in Idaho, I must heartily endorse this, too! A pot luck potato bar might be just the way to celebrate! Other options include potato salad competitions—or any other way to prepare spuds.
For a good smile, check out this family-friendly youtube video of mashed potato wrestling …. even though the event is held in Minnesota
it’s worth a view.
Since August is also Family Fun month, why not get tickets to some local amusement parks to give away as prizes. Also, check out this list of “family” things to do.
One more food item: August is also National Peach Month. My wife and I took fresh peaches and cream to neighborhood pot luck this past week and it was gone in short order. It’s an inexpensive dish that might go over equally as well at your work.
August is also American Artist Appreciation Month. Got any aspiring artists at your workplace? Have an “art exhibit” in which anyone can display their work — or, playing on the Family Fun aspect, let them display art from any of their family members, too!
Finally, since August is National Inventor’s Month, it’s a great time to solicit ideas for ways to improve processes or procedures at work. Here’s a free poster to post on the bulletin board.
It’s been rather warm lately — so keep cool and enjoy the remaining days of summer!
