Five Ways to Boost Employee Retention

My post on Ten Universal Principles of the Workplace was picked up by a lot of other sites—-it even showed up on the Fox News website. Thanks to a post by Garry Kranz at Workforce.com, I came upon additional “ammunition” for making the workplace a place of excellence.

In a Discovery Surveys e-zine, Bruce Katcher recently published a summary of his findings on why people stay at a place of employment  . . . .  It’s a summary of his findings after surveying more than 50,000 employees   (only 50,000!)   :-)

Katcher says “five factors emerged as the best predictors of whether people will stay with their organizations.”  (Not surprisingly, they align well with the 10 Universal Principles).

Given the cost of replacing employees, it would pay—literally—for each of us to take time and actually analyze our own workplaces to see if these conditions exist:

Bruce Katcher’s findings on why people stay:

    - Enjoyment of the Actual Work
Which can be additionally thought of as a sense of accomplishment.

    - Communication with Supervisors
See my recent post on this topic . . .

    - Provide High Quality Products and Services to Customers
Think of it this way: Low commitment to quality = low commitment from employees.

    - Pride in the Work of the Organization
Again, people want to work on things that matter.

    - Optimism about the Future
Think of it as hopeful expectation that the company will continue to grow—even thrive—and be meaningful.

By the way, if you think a survey of your employees (or your customers) might be in order, Katcher’s company does that kind of thing . . .
