Starbucks Coffee please–and a salad to go.
McDonalds Bacon Ranch Salad, step aside, here come the new Starbucks lunch salads.
In an effort to compete for lunch money, Starbucks announced today that they’re adding two salads to their menu. Devotees to over-priced coffee-flavored milk can now get a mozzarella/grape tomato salad, or, for us carnivores, a grilled chicken / roasted corn / black bean salad.
I find it somewhat interesting that this announcement comes just a day after Starbucks’ stock fell 4 percent, due to their announcement that earnings this quarter probably won’t be what they projected.
Still, it’s intriguing that the world’s most prolific drive-by coffee house is adding more food items to its menu. Is this another case of growth for growth’s sake, or is it truly in response to customer requests?
I know of a company that decided it needed to get market share in the health food craze when the term “low fat” emerged from the lips of every person in America. Mind you, the company’s image was the antithesis of health food, but “low fat” and “light” became their two keywords.
For a while.
They tried like the dickens to get people to buy their “health food,” but their efforts flopped. In fact, mentioning those products still causes people at that company to wince.
What do you think? Will the new Starbucks Salads survive, or is this effort going to cause them to stumble in their primary mission: Caffeine for the masses?

I recently heard that an average ‘coffee flavoured milk’ from starbucks contains around 700 calories!! Its not suprising then to hear they’ve added a salad to their menu! With that kind of calorie intake from just a coffee it leaves very little room for proper food!! I know girls who have 2 of these a day not realising its almost their entire daily intake of calories in just 2 cups of coffee!
I can’t imagine going to Starbucks for a salad. But then I have never bought one at McDonalds either.
Seems to me that most of today’s “be everything to everyone” could learn something from In-N-Out Burger. Stick to what you do and do it well.
Meanwhile I will make my salad AND my coffee at home
Our local coffehouse doesn’t offer as much as starbucks, but I think it could give them a run for their money if they came to town.
I assume they did their research and the results showed that selling salads would be profitable. They really don’t have much to lose by doing it because the cost of making a salad is minimal and they will charge $5+ for it.

Very interesting article!
