Ways to kill employee morale
The following list is by no means exhaustive — there are thousands of ways to kill employee morale. But here are a few that emerged from a conversation with a friend of mine the other day. He was sharing with me some of the changes going on at his work, and talking about the number of employees who were leaving as a result (a lot!).
A few ways to kill employee morale:
1. Give a supervisor a raise because he cut everyone’s hours to save the company money.
2. Give everyone a demotion – lower their job title so you don’t have to pay them as much.
3. Make everyone wear stupid looking uniforms.
4. Refuse to back up employee efforts – If they try to uphold company standards but are perceived by vendors or customers as being out of line, line them out publicly.
5. Assume all employees are incompetent and treat them with contempt.
6. Criticize and eliminate any source of camaraderie among employees.
7. Focus ONLY on the the budget. Treat the budget as God.
