What’s your employee motivation level?
“So ya wanna be successful?” If you answer ‘yes’ to that question (and I don’t know too many who wouldn’t), then it might help to think of yourself as an entrepreneur—even if you’re employed.
This concept of branding yourself was made popular by workplace issue guru Tom Peters in his book The Brand You 50 : Or : Fifty Ways to Transform Yourself from an ‘Employee’ into a Brand That Shouts Distinction, Commitment, and Passion!. Personally, I think it’s a great perspective to take.
You can get a feel for how much ‘umph’ you have to think of yourself as a brand by answering a few quetions by management coach Jane Flagello. Flagello wants to know if you’re an “intrapreneur.”
Accorinding to Flagello, intrapreneurs work to make themselves more effective and more profitable from the inside out.
The following is a partial checklist she offers to help you assess your intrapreneurship. Grade yourself on how many you answer with an emphatic “Yes!”
- Do you make strong requests of your manager so you will produce well?
- Do you complete your work so that things do not come back to haunt you?
- Do you continually look for ways to add value to your company?
- Are you willing to grow and change?
- Are you not afraid to ask for help when you need it?
- Do you have a rewarding life outside of work and set healthy boundaries accordingly?
If you answered a resounding “yes!” to four or more of these questions, you probably have a good sense of self-management and an understanding of what it means to be an intrapreneur.
If you answered ‘yes’ to all six, call me. We need to clone you ….
