Your office and the Google revolution
Recently I mulled over a few choices, including whether I should switch all of my office operations to Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google this, and Google that. Several trusted technogeeks were suggesting it, and I’m not a fan of Microsoft’s confiscatory pricing policies, so it seemed like a good idea.
At first.
Then I got to thinking, just how wise is it to entrust ALL my company’s operations to one company? Switching to Google Docs and running all my email through Gmail had its benefits, but what if some techno-geek at Google wants to surf through my stuff? It certainly wouldn’t be difficult. Sure it’s against Google’s policies, but since when have company policies stopped people from doing things they really want to do?
Factor in the occasions when Google calendar was not working on my computer, and suddenly things take on a different light. And then there’s Google’s propensity to “cooperate” with various governments in ways that don’t make me comfortable.
Suffice it to say I decided NOT to entrust my entire operation to Google applications. And, I felt affirmed when I read Tac Anderson’s recent blog post “This is Why Google Scares the Sh*t Out of Companies.”
Don’t misunderstand: Google has useful products that come to us for free; products that are very handy and huge time-savers. So, I tip my hat and offer much thanks to Google for providing those. But for me to entrust my entire operation to them? Uh, no. Can’t and won’t … Because, in some respects, Google scares the $#!+ out of me.
